Father to the Fatherless

God is a Father to the fatherless.

“A Father of the fatherless, a defender of widows, Is God in His holy habitation.”

-Psalm 68:5

God loves children, and often He will put someone in a position to be a father where there is no father.

In the book of Esther we read of a Godly man, Mordecai, who raised his uncle’s daughter.

In chapter 4 there are some insights into his success in her life:

Twice we are told he took her as his own daughter (verses 7, 15)

He loved her as his own, he wasn’t raising her because he had to, he wanted to.

When she was taken away to the kings palace, we read, “Every day Mordecai paced in front of the court of the women’s quarters, to learn of Esther’s welfare and what was happening to her” (verse 11)

His care for her was obvious, he wanted to know how he could help her, pray for her, encourage her.

Esther obtained the favor of the king’s eunuch, (verse 9), and all who saw her, (verse 15), and then of the king, who took her as his wife and queen (verse 17)

Esther obeyed Mordecai in not revealing she was a Jew (verses 10, 20)

She was a respectful, Godly young women, not relying on her outer beauty, but her inner character.

Together, this Godly example of a father and daughter, were able to intercede for their people and save them from destruction.

As I read this story, I see that Mordecai was everything a good father should be. He was righteous, honorable, a man of amazing character and Godly convictions. And because of his love and example, Esther became the same type of person.

Maybe you’re in a situation as a step parent, or relative/friend of a young person, and don’t seem to be making a difference as you would like. Here are some thoughts:

  • Put God first everyday, seeking Him through prayer and Bible study. This will develop the type of character, such as Mordecai had.

  • Look at this person and treat them as your own child.

  • Recognize this is an opportunity by God to mold and shape this person to do great things.

  • Recognize that this relationship is as much for your well being as this person.

  • Remember God is on your side…He is a father to the fatherless, working through you.

It is the Lord who goes before you. He will be with you, He will not leave you nor forsake you. (Deuteronomy 31:8.)

God bless you,
